I was recently hired to create a chart that conveyed the number of business travelers moving through various airport security systems every hour. I thought it would be cool to create silhouettes of a travelers waiting in line and doing what they do, such as talking, guarding their luggage, or checking for messages. Each person would represent 50 or so travelers. That way, instead of the typical bar chart with numbers, I could add simple visuals to reinforce those statistics. Of course, creating custom artwork can be time consuming. But in this case, I was able to find stock photos of travelers in various poses, which I then traced, filled in with black, and placed on top of each bar in my bar graph, which was a very efficient way to do things. You can see the end result below.
